The April schedule of the JEE Main exam would be the second one post the January slot which is scheduled for January 6 to January 20, 2019. The VIT has decided to schedule its VITEEE from April 10 to April 21, 2019. Thus, there are high chances of clashing of VITEEE with JEE Main exam for most of the students. However, there is a sigh of relief for students in face of slot booking option which VITEEE offers (and JEE Main does not). You Decide Like a Teenage Girl

You Decide Like a Teenage Girl Chip and Dan Heath are the brothers who study human behavior and break it down so that we can understand ourselves. They are both business professors (Chip at Stanford Graduate School of Business and Dan at Duke University’s CASE center, which supports social entrepreneurs.) I recommend their first book, Made to Stick, often for people who want to understand how to get messages to resonate with audiences. In their latest book, Decisive, the brothers explore why most of the decisions we make are flawed â€" and how to correct the biases, mistakes and emotions that screw up the process so often. As always, the pair offers a solution to help you make better decisions, whether you’re considering which dessert to order or which job offer you should accept. The first few chapters break down what’s wrong with our decision-making process. And there’s a lot wrong with it. The problem is that knowing we don’t use a good process doesn’t help us, any more than knowing that you’re short-sighted doesn’t help you see better. The first problem with our decision process is that most of us frame the choices too narrowly. For instance, I’d bet that the vast majority of your decisions in a given week consist of “whether or not” options. Should I buy the shoes that are on sale, or not? Should I go to the party or not? Should I break up with my girlfriend or not? The Heaths say that “whether or not” should be a big red flag that you are not looking at alternatives that will produce a good decision. In fact, one study conducted on teenage girls found that 65 percent of their decisions were simply an up or down vote on only one option. Should I go to the party with my friends or not? (The Heaths call this “spotlight behavior;” one option is highlighted while other viable alternatives remain hidden. In reality, there are many more options to consider. The teen could go to the movies, attend a game, and then drop by the party for a few minutes. There is almost always a way to get to “and” instead of “or.” But of course, you’re thinking, that’s about teenage girls. By the time I get to be an adult in business, I am smarter than that. Not so much, as it turns out. A study conducted in 1993 looked at business decisions (product launches, mergers and acquisitions, etc.) after the fact and rated them good or bad based not just on the opinion of the decider (who almost always thought he’d been brilliant), but also based on senior managers who watched the process and evaluated the aftereffects. To the researchers’ great surprise, he found that only 29 percent of the teams making decisions considered more than one option. (The teenage girls actually considered more options 30 percent of the time.) In addition, the researchers found that found that “whether or not” decisions failed 52 percent of the time over the long term, while decisions based on two or more options failed only 32 percent of the time. When a manager only considers one option, such as whether to acquire a company or adopt a new policy, they spend their mental energy thinking about “How can I make this work?” instead of “Is there a better way to do this?” “What else could we do?” The Heaths suggest that whenever you hear “whether or not,” you stop the process right there; you’ll need to widen your options in order to make a really good decision. They suggest that the easiest way to increase your options is to consider what economists call “opportunity cost.” Shane Frederick, who studies decision science for a living, ran a simple study with a cross section of consumers to understand the impact of considering opportunity cost. Here’s what they asked. “Imagine that you have been saving some extra money on the side to make some purchase, and on your most recent trip to the video store, you see a special sale… on a new video by your favorite actor in your favorite genre. This particular video is one you have been thinking about for a long time. The special sales price is $14.99.” What would you do in this situation? a.) Buy this entertaining video. b.) Not buy this entertaining video. 75 percent of the consumers chose to buy the video; only 25 percent resisted temptation. When researchers added just a few words (highlighted below), the results changed dramatically. a.) Buy this entertaining video. b.) Not buy this entertaining video. Keep the $14.99 for other purchases. Really? Did we need that reminder? If we don’t buy the video, we get to spend the money on something else? Apparently, we did need the reminder. With that opportunity cost reminder, 45 percent decided not to buy the video the percentage of people who resisted temptation doubled. If you can’t think of more options, simply remind yourself of what you could do with the time, money or energy you expend on your choice.

Teamwork

Teamwork One of our readers suggested this video to us. Nice video with a clear explanation through   examples of how individualism can get you personal successes, but to win the ultimate battle, you have to work in a team. Teamwork Teamwork is important, not only whilst at work, but also at assessment centres, especially at the group activities. Remember, when an employer gives you a group task, they will judge you on how you work in a team. The end result of the task is not necessarily the most important thing. How to Land a Job When Youre Overqualified

How to Land a Job When Youre Overqualified Photo credit: thinkjose via Foter.com / CC BY-NC-SA Dont have a college degree? Havent worked in that role yet? Dont meet all the job posting requirements? There are plenty of articles that help you get around that issue. But what happens when youre overqualified? This question has come to me quite a few times recently as Ive been working with people who are out of work.  They have great skills but the market is tight.  And each month is another several thousand dollars being sucked out of their bank account with no money coming in. They have a resume.  But it is designed to sell them for their ideal job.  To make the case that theyre an awesome choice.  To get them a lateral transfer or the next job up in the progression. But when those jobs dont show up quickly enough. When it is a buyers market and the employer is in the drivers seat.  Then things get tricky. How do you land a job that youre overqualified for? You need a different strategy.  A modified approach to land this type of position. And your current resume wont work for that purpose. So how do you revamp it so it gets traction and doesnt scare away likely hiring managers? And then how do you position yourself in the interview so you dont overshare.  So you dont oversell yourself and have the hiring manager saying, Youre great.  But you could do my job.  As theyre really saying that theyre concerned you wont be happy the role and then theyll have to find a replacement after a few months. For those situations you need a dumbed-down resume. One that will make you look good enough to get the job interview, but not so good that you blow them away and they cross you off the list because youre too good. So how do you do that? Just as an owner or entrepreneur shouldnt put CEO or Owner or President on their resume so they dont scare away potential opportunities for manager roles, theyd put Manager or Director instead. In the case of your dumbed-down resume you will scale back your responsibilities and maybe eliminate a few of your accomplishments or reword them to fit the position youre interviewing for. Take a position posting for the role youre looking to land.  And then make sure your responsibilities and accomplishments align with that role, not the one above that.  Then plan appropriately for a job interview too.  Figure out what you want to focus on that align with the role.  And identify the questions or areas of discussion that are third-rail risk areas that youll have to effectively dance around. This will not be an easy role to get. It is very hard to undersell yourself and not come off as more knowledgeable that you are in an interview.  That is why overqualified people often make it to the interview but get crossed off the list there.  Theyre so much better than the competition on paper that the hiring manager or recruiter cant pass you up for an interview.  But after they interview you they get cold feet as they realize they wont  be able to pay you what youre worth or that theyll only get you a short time before youre likely to get bored and leave.  And now they realize that they will have to do this all over again.  So they bail out on you. Not in that position yet? How do you avoid getting yourself in this quandary in the first place? You cant always choose when you leave a company.  Sometimes industry or macro-economic shifts change the landscape dramaticallyand layoffs follow.  But if you do have a choice, it is good to wait and choose your exist strategy and timing. Statistics show the average unemployed person are on the unemployment roles for 40 weeks. That means if youve been making $50,000 a year youre giving up $40,000 worth of income. And if you were making $100,000 a year youre forfeiting $80,000 by being out on the street. Do you have $40,000 or $80,000 in your bank account ready to blow? If not think twice, three times, four times before quitting your current job without a safety net (new job offer) in place.  So your boss drives you crazy.  Are you going to let him cost you $40,000 or $80,000? And to you who think, Oh, Im  just going get a contractor gig and make the big bucks.  Is another 10 to 20% more in salary as a contractor going to be worth being unemployed for 40 weeks in a tight market when that contract ends and you dont have another lined up? Or would you be better off with a safer play as an employee that provides more consistent and reliable income over time? Yes, you can make more money as a contractor. But thats only if you have consistent work, you are awesome at what you do, and can market yourself well, and your clients have the budget to pay you. If you dont have all of those you may want to rethink your exit strategy.

A fun thing to do for Christmas - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

A fun thing to do for Christmas - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Danish workers have a tradition of playing small Christmas pranks on each other throughout December,?based on the old folk belief in?nisser, little elf-like creatures that hid in peoples houses and played pranks on people. This is the way it works in many Danish workplaces: At the beginning of December, everyone draws the name of a co-worker without revealing whose name they drew. Throughout December, your job is to play harmless little pranks on that person without getting caught. Just before Christmas you get the whole team together and everyone has to try and guess whos been pranking them. This is fun in itself and you can try that if you want. But lately weve been telling workplaces to turn this around so that instead of pranks, you do anonymous acts of workplace kindness. You can leave candy on someones desk or maybe decorate their workstation for the holidays without getting caught? The possibilities are endless. Get creative :o) So this holiday season, be a good nisse. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles.
